Flexible flat feet and exercise: questions for parents

Focus on comfort and function when considering exercise support for a child with flat feet.

Foot shape is only part of the picture

Flexible flat feet are common in children and are often painless. A low arch alone does not mean that a child needs treatment. Pain, stiffness or difficulty with activity are reasons to seek professional assessment rather than choosing exercises from a photograph.

Clarify the goal before starting

Ask what the child actually finds difficult: taking part in an activity, balancing, following a movement cue or something else. A useful coaching goal describes a function the child can practice. It should not promise a new arch shape.

Questions for a provider

  • How will you take existing professional advice into account?
  • What will you observe during movement practice?
  • How will activities be adjusted if my child is uncomfortable?
  • When would you recommend a healthcare assessment?

A coach should be able to explain the limits of exercise support. Shoe inserts, a clinical diagnosis and treatment choices belong in a conversation with an appropriate healthcare professional.

Transform Kid’s Flat Feet Support program focuses on individualized movement, balance and foot and ankle function where coaching is appropriate.
